For NeoCon 2013, izzy+ provides inspired destinations through human-centered design, thought leadership, and a colorful variety of product vignettes showing better ways of working and learning together

CHICAGO – June 2013 – It’s time to step inside the colorful and always surprising izzy+ showroom during NeoCon 2013, where the buzz will be palpable, the destinations will be inspirational, and all the designs will be strong, good-looking and -- to couch it in Midwestern modesty -- above-average.
The showroom will boast a bevy of practical and beautiful product vignettes that demonstrate the breadth and depth of the izzy+ “Better Together” portfolio, which includes its Fixtures Furniture, HAG, Harter, izzy and ABCO 2.0 brands. All five brands will be resplendently displayed in the new izzy+ flavors collection of colors, materials and finishes.
The overarching theme for izzy+ this NeoCon is “inspired destinations,” designed to call out the stunning variety of approaches izzy+ takes in creating amazing spaces for the ways in which people want to work and learn in the 21st Century.
The izzy+ showroom was designed principally by Allison Roon, who says she sought to pull together “an exciting blend of colors, finishes, and textures that highlight the unique possibilities of izzy+ flavors. It is also a place to provide designers inspiration to creatively customize their own inspired destinations.”
She also designed the showroom to blur the lines between today’s corporate office and higher education markets. “This means that each space is hardworking, incorporates smart uses of technology, and promotes the collaborative process by connecting people together in inspired destinations,” she adds.
“No one puts together inspired destinations with more flair and fun than does izzy+,” says Rick Glasser, Vice President of Marketing and Product Management for the Spring Lake, Michigan-based company. “Our brand is well-known for sparking creative energy, and our key message this year is that our designs and products provide a lively and thoughtful answer for today’s working and learning environments -- both for individual, personal work and for collaborative group settings, and everything in between.”
The izzy+ approach to workplace variety and inspiration is encapsulated by its 3-2-1 calculus, reflecting the trend that people today often work at least some of the day in third spaces and second spaces, as well as first spaces. First spaces are where individual, heads-down work is traditionally done, while second spaces are meeting spaces, such as a conference room, designed for more than one person, and third spaces are those collaborative, more casual and creative settings -- like a coffee bar, or a lounge -- where people can both interact or seek solitude and a change of scenery.
“A healthy workplace will include an appropriate mix of 3-2-1 spaces, and a healthy workday will promote movement among each of those spaces,” adds Glasser. “A variety of inspired destinations naturally encourages movement, and that contributes to a healthier, more social and more productive work environment.”
The izzy+ showroom, in suite 11-100 at Chicago’s Merchandise Mart, will feature a blend of 3-2-1 spaces, an array of concept pieces including the next iteration of a lounge chair and ottoman, as well as a benching and accompanying storage solution. An upholstered back option for the popular Harter Anthro chair will be introduced, and the new KEEL casegoods line from ABCO 2.0 also will be well represented.
The award-winning izzy Nemo Bar and Trellis will be prominent in and out of the showroom, anchoring a number of the third-space vignettes. The work surface of one of the izzy Nemo Bar units in the showroom has three, 24-inch touchscreen computers embedded, running a custom application to demonstrate the utility of a hardware/software integration in the furniture. The potential for end users includes not only web browsing, but also wayfinding, virtual meeting sharing and video chats.
Additionally, a pair of izzy Nemo Trellis units on display are adorned with the creative touches of two young designers (see sidebar) who won a competition izzy+ sponsored earlier this year in conjunction with its annual Valentine’s Day promotion to the architecture and design community.
Winner of the 2012 Best of NeoCon Gold Award for Furniture Systems, the izzy Nemo Bar and Trellis also will be on prominent display in the Merchandise Mart’s first-floor lobby during NeoCon 2013, steps away from the signature izzy+ MINI Cooper parked outside the Mart’s front door. That lobby vignette, created by izzy+ founder and CEO Chuck Saylor, was inspired by Saylor’s favorite hideaway as a child -- a tree fort. The sides of the Trellis are fashioned from reclaimed barnwood and topped with a wheatgrass roof reminiscent of centuries-old Scandinavian buildings. Saylor’s craftily organic interpretation also used as the work surface for the Nemo Bar a striking slab of maple harvested when the tree was toppled during a wind storm.
“So often, great ideas and profound beliefs and actions seemed to be fueled and found when we take the time to reflect in an inspiring place,” said Saylor. “It’s why people go to off-site retreats in the woods, or by the sea. It’s why they take sabbaticals in the mountains to free up their thinking and recharge the batteries. But culturally, we are losing that ability to go offsite and reflect. So we need to create inspiring spaces within the work environment that allow us to have that revelation, to relax our minds, to achieve those ‘aha’ moments.”
Saylor, who founded izzy+ a dozen years ago to create inspiring work and learning spaces for the next generation, said the company remains on a resolute journey to become ever more human-centered in its approach to the world of working and higher education.
“There is a time for work and a time for leisure and reflection, a time to be introverted and a time to be extroverted and collaborate,” he said. “It’s all about a healthy balance, and izzy+ will always be on that journey to find the right balance and to create the products and designs that support and inspire people.”
