On the journey to sustainability, izzy+ enlists in City of Florence's Green Team Partnership
FLORENCE, Alabama – March 9, 2012 – As part of its commitment to steward resources and create a more sustainable future, izzy+ has joined the City of Florence’s Green Team Partnership Program, a new initiative to promote recycling and smart environmental practices.
The program seeks to promote and share best practices in sustainability among companies and organizations in Florence, where izzy+ operates a furniture and seating manufacturing plant employing more than 250 people.
“This is an essential part of our corporate culture and it’s a smart business move, as well,” says Kathy Gifford, who manages critical projects and the supply chain for izzy+ in Florence.
“At izzy+, we’re a young, fresh company dedicated to the environment and sustainability,” Gifford continues. “This Green Team Partnership allows us to live the values we say we stand upon. This is the izzy+ way -- and we can be a leader.”
The Green Team Partnership Program was launched last year by David Koonce, the City of Florence’s Solid Waste Manager, whose goal was to connect the community’s manufacturing and industrial companies to share ideas and expertise.
“Our community needs to be green -- not only the residents, but the businesses and corporations,” says Koonce. “We’re gathering the companies and people with knowledge and commitment. We’re thrilled to have izzy+ on board and to benefit from the ideas and experiences they have. It’s all about saving energy, saving money and doing the right thing for the planet.”
For some time, izzy+ has been recycling metals and aluminum at the Florence facility, according to Jack Harrison, manager of manufacturing operations. More recently, initiatives have been undertaken to begin recycling plastics, paper and wood, as well.
“Obviously, it’s the right thing to do from a community and environmental standpoint, and it’s a central corporate priority for izzy+,” says Harrison. “We’re always looking for more opportunities to solve problems in the local community.”
Adds Gifford: “I don’t see any reason why we should put something in the landfill when you can recycle, reduce or reuse those materials. We should give our employees the opportunity to live out that commitment and stewardship -- and the Green Team Partnership is just another way for us to be a more sustainable business and good corporate citizen. And it’s opening the door to future opportunities to tackle important issues around recycling and sustainability.”
